The first among many posts...I hope.

Let The Games Begin,

Estimates are that 100 million people play poker recreationally or professionally.

At one time or another, EVERY SINGLE ONE OF THEM has dreampt of playing in the Main Event of the World series of Poker.

After 11 mos of online play, home games, and qualifiers, 8000 of these wannabees have cobbled together their precious $10000 entry fee, and have made their way to Mecca.

The Rio Hotel and Casino. Las Vegas Nevada.

And as I can best articulate, this is what it feels like:

Put thousands of these compulsive, gaming addicted, neurosis filled, type A people in a room the size of an airplane hangar, then wait while the buzz of nervous energy builds.

And then, to make the temperature inside the ballroom equal that of July in the desert of Nevada.....................

Ask the staff of Harrah's to deposit EIGHTY MILLION DOLLARS into the center of that ballroom and put it up for grabs. Now, let the 8000 poker degenerates fight for every chip, winner gets 10mm and the surviving top 9% split the remaining $70mm.

And of course, beautifully, to make the most sane among us crazy, - have the winner and the money and the fame be decided (to some degree) by the random distribution of a single deck of 52 cards.

The frenzy starts today at noon and builds every two hours as the blinds and antes increase.

And oh yeah, as if that isn't enough to make the room more combustible than British Petroleum's deepwater drilling expertise, ESPN will film the next 2 weeks of play and broadcast the drama to 100 countries worldwide.

The winner will also secure a diamond encrusted gold bracelet, worldwide fame, 8 figure endorsement contracts, and poker immortality as the 2010 Main Event World Champion.

For me, cards in the air wednesday at noon!

This year, thanks to Brookie P you can also follow the action at www.reagoatwsop.blogspot.com
